Open Europeans Helsinki 2011 - Women’s Match Racing - Day Two

Another excellent day of sailing in Helsinki, Finland for day two of the Women’s Match racing event at the 2011 Open Europeans saw the completion of the Round Robin stage and the beginning of the Quarter Finals.

Anne-Claire Le Berre (FRA) lead the way into the Quarter Finals with a nearly perfect record of 10 wins from 11 matches.

Among the qualifiers was local Silja Lehtinen (FIN) alongside her team, Silja Kanerva and Mikaela Wulff. They grabbed the 8th spot with a win-loss record of 4-7 (by winning the tie break over Lotte Meldgaard (DEN) and Ru Wang (CHN)).

In the afternoon the weather in Helsinki became very muggy and humid. After flight 21 the racing was stopped for half an hour. When the break was over, the match racers were able to finish their round robin series smoothly in a reasonable breeze with no rainfall.

The quarter-finals at Hernesaari started on Friday with four flights and will continue on Saturday at 10 o’clock. The pairings are as follow:

Silja Lehtinen (FIN) vs. Tamara Echegoyen (ESP)
Olivia Price (AUS) vs. Mandy Mulder (NED)
Rita Goncalves (POR) vs. Ekaterina Skudina (RUS)
Silvia Roca Mata (ESP) vs. Anne-Claire Le Berre (FRA)

After the four sailed flights in the quarter-finals, Lehtinen and Echegoyen are tied 1-1. Mulder, Skudina and Le Berre hold a 2-0 lead against their opponents. A team needs three wins to advance to the next stage.
