Match Racing Clinic in South Africa
The Women’s International Match Racing Association (WIMRA) held its first introductory match racing and begining umpiring clinics in Cape Town, South Africa this past week.

Thirty-six sailors and umpires from four regions throughout South Africa participated in the five days of classroom and on the water training at the Royal Cape Yacht Club. The clinic was led by Liz Baylis, WIMRA Executive Director, with the help of South African Olympian Dominique Provoyeur.

When asked about the clinic, Dominique said: “I was thoroughly impressed with how much everyone learned. By the end of the clinic, you could see that the sailors were putting together the pieces and were definitely match racing. It was great to see how enthusiastic everyone is about doing more match racing in the future.”

One participant said “I think I’m hooked! This was even more fun than I thought it would be - I can’t wait to go out and do it again.” Another “I never quite understood what they were doing during the America’s Cup, now it has all become so much clearer. And even better, I know that I can do it!”

This program is organized in conjunction with North U., the educational wing of North Sails. North U. runs a full range of on-the-water programs geared towards accelerating the education of sailors. www.northu.com
