ISAF Mid-Year Meeting – Where Does Women’s Match Racing in 2012 Stand?
The ISAF Mid-Year Meeting was held in Paris in May and the "list of possible events" for the 2012 Olympics was announced. From this list a total of 10 events will be selected.

The list for Women:
  • single handed dinghy

  • double handed dinghy

  • double handed high performance dinghy

  • windsurfer

  • keelboat

  • multihull

The list for the Men:
  • single handed dinghy

  • single handed dinghy - heavy

  • double handed dinghy

  • double handed high performance dinghy

  • windsurfer

  • keelboat

  • multihull

The list for Open:
  • multihull

In November 2007, the ISAF Council will have to select 4 Women’s events. The rest (6) will be selected from the Men’s list and/or the Open list.

What does this mean to Women’s Match Racing?

In order for match racing to be included in the Olympics, “keelboat” must be one of the 4 events chosen for women. If “keelboat” is selected, then the Council will have the opportunity to decide between fleet racing and match racing as the format for the keelboat event. This decision will also be made this November.

Our first challenge will be to develop a strategy to try to assure that “keelboat” gets selected for women. At the same time we will be continuing to work on our strategy to have match racing selected as the format.

Women’s match racing has certainly captured the attention of the ISAF Council. There have been many comments that the women are voicing their opinions in favor of women’s match racing. We need to keep having our voices heard!

So, we need to keep the focus on women’s match racing for 2012. We will need to use as many resources as possible to convince as many Member National Authorities (MNAs) and Council members as possible that women want the match racing and that it will be good for the sport, ISAF and the IOC.

We will continue to ask for your assistance and ideas to help us achieve our goal of seeing Women’s Match Racing in the 2012 Olympic Games!
